I have read the Yamil translation of this book。I cannot believe how he for-see future。The author had vision。Totalitarian government won’t work。Like big brother smart phones watches our every move。I’m scared of ultra rich people power。Powerful propaganda 。The ministry of Truth recently America announced that it will enact a truthful information section in administration。One of the great books I read。Eager to read his other book Animal farm 。

the plot itself isnt the best, but the way orwell creates such a convincing image of oceania is insane。

This must have been truly revolutionary at the time of publication。 However, having sampled copious amounts of dystopian fiction, both literary and cinematic, one is sort of blase about '1984'。 Comparisons with the author's other monumental work, 'Animal Farm', are inevitable。 While AF not only delivers a powerful anti-Communism message, it also works as an entertaining tale of shifting hierarchies within a closed society。 But '1984' is too much messaging and too little fun。 The insufficient tim This must have been truly revolutionary at the time of publication。 However, having sampled copious amounts of dystopian fiction, both literary and cinematic, one is sort of blase about '1984'。 Comparisons with the author's other monumental work, 'Animal Farm', are inevitable。 While AF not only delivers a powerful anti-Communism message, it also works as an entertaining tale of shifting hierarchies within a closed society。 But '1984' is too much messaging and too little fun。 The insufficient time spent on building characters leaves the apolitical leader dissatisfied and also, unaffected by the protagonist's eventual doom。 Word is that Orwell was racing against his own imminent demise when working on this novel。 Maybe that's why the whole affair seems a bit rushed。 Still, it is an important work of 20th century fiction, and hence, a recommendable read。 。。。more

I have been wanting to read 1984 for over 38 years and finally have! It did not disappoint to say the least。 I have it 4 stars because it was boring at times, although necessary, to set up different plots and developments。 There was nothing surprising as I read, but was still great to finally read the great Orwell piece。 What I can say, is how ahead of his time Orwell was with making spot on “predictions” about the future。 Great read!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I would more lean on giving this a 3。5 out of 5 if I could do that with Goodreads。 But this is a good book, could even be a great book in my opinion if George Orwell have a little more characterization to the characters at times especially in the beginning。 But where this book really picks up is with it’s world building and writing。 Orwell is able to create this terrifying world and describe just how terrifying it is perfectly。 This really shows at the end of the book where Winston is tortured i I would more lean on giving this a 3。5 out of 5 if I could do that with Goodreads。 But this is a good book, could even be a great book in my opinion if George Orwell have a little more characterization to the characters at times especially in the beginning。 But where this book really picks up is with it’s world building and writing。 Orwell is able to create this terrifying world and describe just how terrifying it is perfectly。 This really shows at the end of the book where Winston is tortured in the ministry of love, which might be one of the most terrifying parts of a book I’ve ever read。I see why today it’s such a cultural touchstone of our society and when it was released。 And while it’s not perfect by any means it’s a pretty good book all things considered。 。。。more

It took me a bit to actually understand what was going on in the book but once I got to understanding it it was really good! i def recommend this if you’re looking for a good classic to read! i find it amazing that this book was written in the 50s and just predicted everything。

very well written book, with an ending that made the reader think。 Although I would’ve liked a bit more clarification about some of the characters endings, but in a way that’s what made it brilliant as I could not stop thinking about all of the alternate endings and background characters in the story。

Libro giusto ma letto al momento sbagliato。 Incredibilmente vicino al periodo storico che stiamo vivendo, enormemente distante da ciò di cui avevo bisogno。

i read this book for school so i didn’t read it out of “i want to” but because i had to & i started it the day before we were due to have finished it, BUT I MADE IT! it was okay, great writing though and orwell’s views for the future are relatively true (actually i don’t even know i’m just going along with what everyone else is saying) the whole thought crime thing is crazy, but what’s even crazier is the Party trying to restrict sex by making it something gross。 the whole “anti-sex” thing is so i read this book for school so i didn’t read it out of “i want to” but because i had to & i started it the day before we were due to have finished it, BUT I MADE IT! it was okay, great writing though and orwell’s views for the future are relatively true (actually i don’t even know i’m just going along with what everyone else is saying) the whole thought crime thing is crazy, but what’s even crazier is the Party trying to restrict sex by making it something gross。 the whole “anti-sex” thing is so funny。 I HATED THE PART THAT WAS LIKE 20 PAGES LONG about goldstien’s book, i read a bit, couldn’t understand half of the words and gave up!! 。。。more

I read 1984 when I was in high school, before the year 1984。 I understood Orwell was inspired by his fear of Nazism and Stalinism, but that did not seem very relevant to me in the US。 Reading the book again (for our Indy UChicago Book Club) it seems frighteningly relevant, because the US elected a fascist in 2016 to be President and Putin is moving Russia in the direction of the hellish totalitarian state created by George Orwell in 1984。 Currently Kim Jong-un's North Korea is a nearly perfect m I read 1984 when I was in high school, before the year 1984。 I understood Orwell was inspired by his fear of Nazism and Stalinism, but that did not seem very relevant to me in the US。 Reading the book again (for our Indy UChicago Book Club) it seems frighteningly relevant, because the US elected a fascist in 2016 to be President and Putin is moving Russia in the direction of the hellish totalitarian state created by George Orwell in 1984。 Currently Kim Jong-un's North Korea is a nearly perfect model of the nightmare Orwell envisioned, but other authoritarian governments are moving in that direction。 Orwell's warning that fascist and communist dictatorships pose the same danger to individual freedom should be taken seriously by everyone who is not a brainwashed ideological fanatic。 If you don't want the thought police eventually coming after you, don't ever vote for a politician who has authoritarian inclinations。 Orwell warned us back in 1948 that individual liberties must be guarded and authoritarianism resisted。 Otherwise, look out。 Big Brother will be watching you。 。。。more

The concept is terrifying and I understand everything the author was trying to convey, but I could not get through the whole thing fully。 The world-building is fantastic and the author did a great job of explaining everything in detail。 The fact that some of the stuff he describes is happening today is chilling。However, Winston is the main character, and I did not like nor root for Winston at all。 Maybe for a few pages at the beginning, but after that, I started to care less and less about him a The concept is terrifying and I understand everything the author was trying to convey, but I could not get through the whole thing fully。 The world-building is fantastic and the author did a great job of explaining everything in detail。 The fact that some of the stuff he describes is happening today is chilling。However, Winston is the main character, and I did not like nor root for Winston at all。 Maybe for a few pages at the beginning, but after that, I started to care less and less about him and the moment he told Julia he used to 'hate the sight of her and had wanted to rape her and smash her head in,' just completely buried the character for me。 I read thoroughly until the moment they got caught。 After that, I skimmed a few pages and ended up googling how the book ended, only to find out they end up right where they started。 。。。more

I’ve somehow only just read this book now, which floors me, as a longtime fan of dystopian lit。 I think I’ve been saving up for it, in the back of my mind, for some time。 Well, it did not disappoint。 Kafka, Huxley, and others predated it, and brilliantly。 But yes, 1984 is king。

In his novel, George Orwell presents us with a picture of a bleak totalitarian regime, complete with its ideology, cultish behaviour and torture rooms, but, above all, it is a tale about the human spirit, and how little it takes to convince one they’re in the wrong。The story itself is totally hopeless, but the absolute worst part of it is the accuracy with which it describes the workings of a modern totalitarian society, nearly word for word。 As a friend of mine once wrote, “bonus points for bei In his novel, George Orwell presents us with a picture of a bleak totalitarian regime, complete with its ideology, cultish behaviour and torture rooms, but, above all, it is a tale about the human spirit, and how little it takes to convince one they’re in the wrong。The story itself is totally hopeless, but the absolute worst part of it is the accuracy with which it describes the workings of a modern totalitarian society, nearly word for word。 As a friend of mine once wrote, “bonus points for being a book that contains awful things and has a hopeless ending but didn’t make me want to throw up and take a shower but instead let me process everything”, the novel lets the reader take in its horrible, horrible contents through understandable, clear and frank words and expressions, without sugar-coating or literary weaselling — a great way to make the story accessible for more people。As much as I didn’t fully “enjoy” all of its aspects and parts, I do strongly recommend it to everyone: only through knowledge, we can stand up to tyranny, especially in face of events so terrifyingly totalitarian we see today。 。。。more
